In 2010, disaster stuck the 'in-the-know' in Forks and La Push. There was a huge fight between the wolves -bar Jacob Black, Seth Clearwater and Leah Clearwater- and the Cullens. The war was about Renesmee and her obvious like of another person.

Jacob was upset, although it was Sam who started the war. Jacob decided he would be perfectly happy, as long as Renesmee was happy.
Sam took it way out of control and in the end, it ended up in a war.

The Cullens won and wiped out most of the wolves. After which, Billy Black and the other elders of the pack made the treaty void and threatened to expose the Cullens.
The Cullens had to move away. And fast. From then on, there have been shapeshifters, vampires, witches, wizards and humans living in. . . well, I guess you could say harmony.
The humans of Forks have absolutley no idea that they live in a world full of Mythical creatures.
